Peridot Jewelry

When choosing an ideal gem to compliment your summer wardrobe, peridot is the perfect selection. This vivid green gemstone is the birthstone of August. It is an old gem that has regained current popularity. This gemstone can be seen in the Egyptian jewelry pieces that date as far back as the 2nd BC. Many of the stone in those days came from the Red Sea on a volcanic island. This trendy gemstone can now be found in deposits situated in the region of Kashmir.

Crafting the Stone

Peridot is cut with the shape of its crystal. It is faceted and often in classic table cuts. Round, oval and antique cuts are often seen as well. Small crystals are usually preserved for series stones. Larger stones are used in unique pieces. Peridot is not easy for craftsmen to work with. Many times, the raw crystals crack easily. On the inside of the gemstone, there may be a great amount of tension. Once coarser inclusions are removed, the stone has great qualities that need no special caring.

Where the Gem is Found

Peridot is a variety of the gem olivine. This stone has hardness in the range of 6.5 and 7. Most quality gems are found in Arizona, Norway, Burma, Hawaii, Red Sea islands and often in meteorites. Peridot has mined for many thousands of years. It is talked of in the Bible where it is known as Chrysolite. This stone was a favorite for Cleopatra and although worn frequently many mistook these for emeralds.

Lore about Peridot

Peridot is believed by some to bring the person wearing it a great deal of luck as well as successfulness and peacefulness. It is believed by others to have healing powers, bring protection and induce sleep. Peridot has long been thought to help in attracting love and in calming anger by relaxing the nerves and getting rid of negative thoughts and emotions.

Buying the Precious Stone

When choosing to add peridot to your fine collection of precious gemstones, you should be careful to know what you are looking for. The most popular type of peridot is a vivid color of lime green that does not have any olive tones. The color of the peridot should be distributed evenly. American peridot is usually found in less than three carat sizes. While larger size of peridot are often pricey, smaller sizes that have been cut as well as beads made of peridot are reasonably priced. Larger stones of Peridot usually come from China and Pakistan.
